Some key fobs go dormant for security when they have been still for a while. Latest security method development, just wondered if ours had been updated. Mine will be keyless if it reappears from VW's black hole馃榿

How about leaving the key by the car ?

If the key has a dormant state won't it go to sleep and not allow the car to be opened ?
A quick shake of the key may then wake it up and then the car should open?

No idea if this will work, but maybe worth a try..
