Hi all. First post. Almost convinced to buy a T Cross but issue of no spare. Sales person at dealership went to ask the service dept and they said you can't put a spare of any size in boot as "it would stand up above boot floor and be illegal as you wouldn't be able to secure it so you'd void your insurance!" Sales manager then came along and said you can fit a spare in no problem. Who's right? This is almost a deal breaker with me purchasing or not.

I would say if it's in enough to not move about when driving then it's legal. You'd prob get actual info if you go on RAC or DVLA sites

Or get the space saver?

Rubbish. A full size or space saver will fit in the well in the boot. I can't see them moving even if they are not bolted down. VW used to have a space saver as an optional extra, I don't know whether that's still the case, so they obviously had no issue.

I bought a standard space saver from amazon, fitted in the well no problem and the hold down for the inflator kit is the same one for the spare wheel. Unscrew, remove inflator kit, drop in wheel, screw back into lock down.

This must be a Europe/UK thing yes?

My Australian T-Cross came with a "space saver" spare in the boot under the floor. I quote the word space saver as it is a full size tyre, R16, as opposed to the R17 wheels that my vehicle came with. The dealer nearly hurt himself trying to explain the use of the words "space saver" for a full sized tyre.

I have normal, not space saver, 16inch spare in boot under the lid at lowest position so they are lying or didn't care to find out, bad service.

My dealer even thoroughly recommended to get the optional spare as piece of mind...

I'm getting the space saver. Only ever needed to use one once, but you never know when you might need it

I said (to myself) no problem not having a spare, when's the last time I had a puncture (hint, at least 5 years ago). Then a month or 2 into the cross, drove off and just down the road had a flat warning. Yup, almost totally flat.

Only quarter mile from hone so wasn't going to mess with the gunk, so just inflated the tyre. That itself is a pain, as the 12v socket's inside the passenger compartment so you've got to feed the wire through an open window, plug it all in then realise you need the ignition on for the 12v! Nursed it back home, and went off in my car.

Later decided to take the tyre off and take it into the repair. NO JACK OR TYRE LEVER! Had to use the ones from my car to get the wheel off. Hence why I've now bought a space saver. Got a scissor jack and tyre lever with it but looking to find the more compact VW one's somewhere.

There are a few topics opened for the spare wheel with plenty information and part numbers for the dealer provided full size wheel (see links below).

I personally bought an 18" space saver wheel from the wheel shop and fits perfectly in the boot wheel. Your dealer does not know what he's saying, the boot well is very deep and you can fit a full size wheel in it with space to spare.

Ive just ordered the whole kit from VW including a full size 17" wheel, brace and jack for around £220 which i think is quite reasonable. Sits snuggly in the space provided.
