Your both talking about different warnings. The 2 car display is in the lower area where ACC speed. lane keeping and the trips are. This is the 'driving too close'.

Neilmanc is talking about a big large warning between the dials, showing a car with radar like lines on all 4 sides. This is the 'collision imminent' warning, sometimes it also slams the brakes on. Had this at 5 mph following a car out of a car park, and pulling away onto an empty roundabout. Never had it in a potential real emergency!

There are threads on all the VW forums reporting random spurious collision warnings (which you describe) without a known cause.
